West bridge, Corydon, Indiana, 1908

Description: A view of the late 19th century west bridge over Indian Creek in Corydon after a light snow. The bridge in the photo was constructed ca. 1880 and was a double span bowstring truss design of 164 feet in length. In 1889, the bridge was the site of the hanging of two men by a vigilante group known as the White Caps. The bridge remained at this location on Big Indian Creek until it was replaced in 1917. At this time, the older bridge was moved several miles downstream to an isolated spot. It remained in use until 1993, before being closed to traffic. Still in place, it was washed away by floodwaters in 1997.
