Delta Queen, postcard

A 1967 postcard addressed to Dan Griffin featuring the Delta Queen steamboat. The Delta Queen was built in Scotland in the early 1920s and shipped to California where it was assembled. In World War II, the ship was used to transport soldiers. In 1946, the Greene Line of Cincinnati, Ohio, purchased the vessel, and it entered regular passenger service on the Ohio, Mississippi, Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers. It was also an annual participant in the Great Steamboat Race of the Kentucky Derby Festival in Louisville, Kentucky, where it competed against the Belle of Louisville on the Ohio River. The Delta Queen was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1989. |
