Description: |
A photo of the Majestic, a touring showboat, docked at rivers edge near a boat ramp. Several people can be seen on the boats lower deck, and a few individuals are nearby on shore. The exact location and date are unknown; however the Majestic was docked on the Ohio River at Mauckport, Indiana, in July 1960 for a play performance by an Indiana University theater group, therefore it is likely that the photo is from that event. The Majestic was built in 1923 in Pittsburgh and was the last floating theater to be built in the U.S. The Majestic traveled the Ohio River and its tributaries and presented shows at towns along the route. College and universities, including Indiana University, used the ship for summer theater performances, and Indiana University purchased the Majestic in 1959. The Majestic was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1989. |
