Description: |
This picturesque view of Milltown, Indiana, taken in 1902, features the four-story mill along Blue River as well as the dam and wooden covered bridge that spanned the waterway. The bridge was constructed in 1862 and torn down and replaced in 1913. It was rebuilt again in the late 1970s. Milltown resides in both Crawford and Harrison Counties with Blue River serving as the boundary line. The mill sat on the Crawford County side.Seth Leavenworth first established a grist mill and saw mill at this site around 1820 and harnessed the power of Blue River by constructing a dam. For a time, the area was known as Leavenworth’s Mill, but as people began to settle nearby, Leavenworth created and filed a plat for a town in 1827 and named it Milltown. He later sold the mill to Julius Woodford, who leased the operation to Captain David Summers and William Gibbs. Around 1860, the property was sold to the firm of Pollock and Mauck of Corydon, who continued to lease to Summers and Gibbs. Three brothers from Ohio, Emanuel, Edmund, and William Hotstetter, then purchased the mill property. In 1868, the brothers discontinued the sawmill, razed the original grist mill, and constructed the four-story mill building pictured in this image. The mill stood for nearly a century. During this time it had various owners, operators, and millers including James E. Jackson, Fred Bye, F. E. Hancock, William Ross, Ollie and Henry Boldt, D. M. Stroud, Guy Longest, Charles Rothrock, Wood Hurn, and John Vance. Around 1930, a new dam was constructed and the old one was removed. Work at the mill ceased in 1942, and the bank took possession of the property. The following year, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Korff of Indianapolis purchased the mill, and in 1957, when faced with the possibility of the property being condemned, the Korff’s had the mill torn down. |
