013_Fabrique-Mauck Mill

Description: Henry L. Fabrique (1789-1849), a native of Hinnesburg, Vermont, built this saw and grist mill on Big Indian Creek in 1835. Fabrique also built a dam on the waterway to power the mill. The mill was situated along the creek about a mile southwest of Corydon at the foot of the steep hillside known as Pilot Knob, in what is now the Hayswood Nature Reserve. In 1864, Fabrique sold the mill to John J. Mauck (1827-1902), and the Mauck family operated it for many years, thus making it commonly known as Maucks Mill. The Fabrique-Mauck Mill was an important component of early life in Harrison County. At one time it was the only grist mill in the vicinity, and people traveled many miles in wagons and horseback to have their grain processed. At times, the customers were so numerous that many had to wait two or three days before their turn came. When first constructed, the mill was operated solely by water power. Later, the mill was remodeled with more modern improvements. The mill was razed in 1903.
