016_Lanesville Milling Co.

Description: This mill was built in Lanesville, Indiana around 1914 by Edward Gresham and Bruce Markel. Later owners included Russel Barry, Joseph Bauer and Albert Hess. George Richmern and Anthony Kochert co-owned the business in the 1920s and 1930s, and eventually Kochert and his son Maurice owned and operated the facility. The Lanesville Milling Co. remained in the Kochert family with brothers Maurice, James, and Paul Kochert running the primarily flour mill, which operated until 1978. In 1993, the historic mill reopened as the Lanesville Feed and Farm Supply under new owners, siblings Laura Steiner Hornickel and Jason Steiner, who kept the original flour mill open for occasional demonstrations. Earlier mills in the Lanesville area include one built by Philip Zabel about 1840, which was later owned by his son and son-on-law, John Zabel and Louis Hussung. This early mill burned in 1880, and a second mill was built the following year and operated by Fred and Henry Zabel until about 1912.
