Dr. William E. Amy

Description: Dr. William E. Amy was a practicing physician for fifty-nine years. Born in 1880 in Washington Township, he was the son of George N. and Sarah Emma Pitman Amy. After graduating from the Kentucky School of Medicine in Louisville in 1903, he began his medical practice in Bicknell, Indiana in Knox County. Dr. Amy moved to Corydon in 1910 and became one of the regions leading physicians. He was instrumental in helping get the State to build Silvercrest Hospital in New Albany, and later he became the first director of the Harrison-Floyd Health Department, a position which he held for 25 years. Dr. Amy served overseas in the Army Medical Corps in WW I and also was a prominent civic leader in the Corydon area, and for a number of years he served as President of the Eureka Telephone Company. Dr. Amy died in 1962 at the age of 82.
