Belt carries to basement for storage Clay ready for the potter 1) First a model of the piece of China is made then a plaster Paris mold 2) Making cups boy drops wad of clay in mold then the men shape it and another boy carries away Two men make 750 dozen cups in a day Jigger on which bowls etc. are shaped 3) After standing in molds in warm rooms the cups (also other pieces) are shaped still further and smoothed up by various methods. Then passed on to men who put handles on 4) Handles are pressed into shape by boys Still quite soft at this stage Kept moist Platters pitchers etc. made wholly by hand shaping, over and into molds 3 or 4 boys help each man 7 After first firing brushed and then dipped in liquid glaze - dries quickly 6) 275 saggers are stacked in bisque kiln 5) Packed in saggers 50 hours in here at 2300 degrees Opening and unpacking a kiln 8) Then fired again Flowers etc. put on by decalcomania process Like the kiddies transfer Decorating artistic tinting with airbrush Painting with real gold paint even the cheap sets then placed in large muffled kiln and fired again Crown Potteries |
