Cartoon showing the effects of the 1937 flood for various people in Evansville, and showing a way to remember how high the water came. Image Access WideTEK 25 1937 the year 53.74 feet the high mark January 31, 1937. We all ought to remember the year 37 easily-the river stage-none will forget that it went over 50 feet-so remember to combine 50 with 37 the year, and you will have it, 53.7 feet. And now we wont have to clean house this Spring will we? It just missed that much of getting in our first floor but cross the street that had two feet. We didnt get to move a thing and its a mess-all ruined-a fire would of made it a sure loss but this way we have a soaked mess you dont know what do with. We had to got Aunt Ellas 10 of us and then we moved again when it went to 52.9. No gas no water no electricity and for a week we couldnt get out. It was within a foot of the ceiling. We had to leave Sunday night and didnt even get our auto out. Nothing to talk about she was out of town-missed it all. Most of us tenderfoots had bootees. |
