Karl Kae Knecht Cartoon

Description: This cartoon is part of The Week series with vignettes depicting important recent and upcoming events. At the top left, a straw boater hat with a striped band flies in from an unseen source. In the top right, a large woman in a dress and Phrygian cap looks down at a much smaller man in a toga. Below them, a circus parade passes through. Two elephants with decorative blankets on their backs march single file in the parade, one holding onto the tail of the other with its trunk. Above them a ball flies through the air and people watch the parade through windows in a building. A boy, woman, and man sit on top of a text box reading The Week and watch the parade with their backs to the viewer. In the left center, Congressman Boehne stands at a desk wearing a suit and hat and smoking a corncob pipe. In the center, a man sits slumped over at a desk with his head on his arm. Papers are piled up around his and Boehnes desks. At the center right, a man in a suit speaks to the reader. In the bottom left corner, the backside of a woman in a dress is visible as she bends over and walks through a small doorway. She is holding a large rolling pin in one hand. Next to her, a young man looks at himself in the mirror as he applies blackface make up. In the bottom right corner, Knechts elephant stands on his hind legs in front of a pile of flowers. A gust of wind blows some of the flowers in to the air around a picture of a woman.
