Karl Kae Knecht Cartoon

Description: Christopher Columbus, top left, comments that no one really celebrates his day (October 12) anymore, except as a holiday from school and work. A reporter asks him what he thinks about Russian satellite Sputnik, which orbited the world every 96 minutes. Milwaukee Braves won the World Series. A Native American mans head appears with the word Milwaukee written across his forehead. He wears a crown labeled World Champs on his head; the crown has a baseball in it. Evansville-Tri State celebrates. Bottom center: City bus strike has ended. Public boards a city bus and hands the driver a dollar bill. The driver hands him some tickets and asks whether he wants a nickel change or if he wants a transfer. Public asks the driver how long it will make bus drivers to make up the three weeks pay they lost by striking, since they only got a 5 cent per hour pay increase as a result of the strike. The answer is given as around 97 weeks. Bottom right: Philharmonic Orchestra opens its season on Monday; West Side Fall Festival ends tonight. Top right: 30th District United Steel Workers of America hold a convention in Evansville. Mayor Hartke and Congressman Denton sit on opposite ends of a steel beam which is being raised into the air. A man stands in the middle of the beam and looks at Russian satellite Sputnik as it passes.
