Karl Kae Knecht Cartoon

Description: Top left: A rabbit labeled Primaries lines up a row of white rabbits representing mayoral candidates. A donkey (representing the Democratic party) and an elephant (Republican party) lean against a fence and look over at the rabbits competing for their respective nominations. Another rabbit, Rumors, tells the elephant that there might of been another candidate; a note in the cartoons margin indicates that another candidate joined the race after the cartoon was finished. Top right: A woman sits on a chair or stool. Her face, hands, and clothing are covered in paint or egg dye. Behind her there is a huge pile of Easter eggs; open pots of paint, broken eggs, and other items litter the table and floor. Santa Claus stands in the bottom left corner of the panel; the Easter Bunny jumps into the air next to him and says that dying eggs is fun. Bottom left: Khrushchev holds out his arms to indicate four large eggs which he has just finished painting to look like Western leaders de Gaulle (France), Macmillan (Britain), Eisenhower (U.S.) and Adenauer (West Germany). He says that the Russian czars used to have Easter eggs made of gold and jewels, and that he just painted a few hard boiled ones. Bottom right: A cross with a crown of thorns hanging on it. A scroll indicates that it is Good Friday.
