Karl Kae Knecht Cartoon

Description: A crowd of people gather inside a circus tent to look at a row of elephants standing behind a rope. Several people ask circus employees questions about elephants. One man in a ringmaster costume asks why people here are so interested in elephants and says that they must have answered a thousand questions about them. A few people in the crowd talk about helping purchase an elephant for the Evansville zoo. Three panels at the bottom of the cartoon depict scenes from Kay the elephants trip to Mesker Zoo in Evansville by ship, which was then underway. Kay the elephant was named for Karl Kae Knecht for his love of elephants, his support for the zoo, and for using his cartoons to ask for donations to support the elephants purchase.

Whats the elephant interest here? If we answered one, we answered a thousand questions today about elephants. How long do they live? How big will they grow? How much do they eat? What [does] one cost? Well, well--Dan, Im mighty glad this Courier--John Robinson Circus 50 year club brought us together again. Remember John Lowlow in Shawneetown, how we fixed him. We own an elephant we do. We helped buy one. J.R. Aunt Ella and Little Kay.... The chalk cliffs of England. The beach at Ostend, Belgium. Close enough to the shore of Holland to see some windmills. Strip, a daily feature, while paper was conduction a buy an elephant for zoo campaign.]
