Karl Kae Knecht Cartoon

Description: A crowded train pulls out of a station. A soldier on the platform, which is visible through the train window, says that this train was his last chance to get home before Christmas. A woman responds that it was her last chance to see her son before he left camp. Two couples on the train represent Unnecessary Civilian Travel; they are traveling for fun and to see people they barely know. Two soldiers standing in the aisle discuss how long they have been standing there.

Well that was my last chance to get home in time for Christmas. Mine too--to get my connections to see my boy before he left camp, to sail--. A number of soldiers and some civilians, one an elderly woman, couldnt get on at this stop. No--not relatives! Were going 400 miles just to have Christmas cheer with some friends we met last summer. Were off to the big town for holiday fun. Ive been standing now for 150 miles. Its a nuisance all these folk standing around us! Unnecessary civilian travel. Yeah! Any way to get home I say. Im leaving home on a war-job trip. [in margin: 900 to go 3 days each (illegible). 12-18-42.]
