Karl Kae Knecht Cartoon

Description: Cartoon about doctors in the military. A poem about doctors serving in the military occupies the center of the cartoon. Top: Public tries to visit his doctor, but the office is closed because the doctor has gone to war. A doctor opens the door of the office next door and says he will take Public in turn; his waiting room is full of people and a text box says there is only one doctor for every 1600 people. Bottom left: Uncle Sam stands next to Indiana (a man in a military uniform holding a medical bag on his lap; he represents all Indiana physicians who have joined the armed forces) and tells doctors representing other states that Indiana will wait for them to meet their quotas; Indiana has exceeded its quota. Knechts elephant tells readers to use their doctors like they do their tires--save them for when they are really needed so that they will last.

Men in White by Sidney Kramer. They are marching too our men in white, No guns or planes but still in the fight, Into the most where pain is sought, With nimble fingers, well trained, well taught. A knife, a scalpel, a cut, a stitch, My God it hurts, please doctor quick, The pain is eased, a sigh is heard, Also a blessing from a man with nerve, Thanks Doc, youre awfully good, another minute is all Id stood, So another life is saved again By our Men in White, Gods Mercy Men. 973. Doctor Closed Gone to War. See doctors... 974. O.K. brother--Ill take you too! (in turn). (Aside: I believe Id rather be in the service.) One for 1600 persons. Hell wait till you catch up youre 16,000 short. Indiana. M.D. Indiana is up on its quota. New Jersey. Ohio. Michigan. Massachusetts. Pennsylvania. Illinois. California. New York. So--spare the doc as you do your tires--use him only when you really need him so hell last.
