In Nazi-occupied France, a group of people read a sign posted on a wall which says that all family members of fugitives from German military justice must present themselves within 10 days of a fugitives escape or arrest. If they fail to do so, the fugitives adult male relatives will be shot, women will be sentenced to hard labor, and all children will be sent to reform schools. Knechts elephant wears a Phrygian cap and holds a French flag behind his back; he remarks this was posted the day before Bastille Day, Frances national holiday.
