Description: |
George Washington Merritt (April 16, 1820 - July 2, 1908) was born to George Stewart Merritt and Jane Carden. He married Malvina Johnson (September 23, 1823 - Feb 7, 1889) daughter of Thomas Johnson and Melinda Perry on December 23, 1843. According to Barbara Stauch, his great-granddaughter, George W. Merritt (1821 – 1917) spent his early life attending school and assisting his father on the farm. At age 20 he “bought his time,” of his father for $100 and began a partnership with James Sigerson in the nursery business, which he followed successfully for 35 years. He once developed a pear tree that bore two kinds of pears. Sigerson was on 1840 census as a single farmer, but no other record of him is available. He was a small man, particular about his beard and hair, and had a dominate personality. He didn’t like “new-fangled” furniture, including rockers. He preferred his straight cane chair. |
