United States vs. Samuel Rocus

Description: An indictment against Samuel Rocus is filed by the jurors for the United States of America and the body of Knox County. They state upon their oath present that Samuel Rocus late of Vincennes Township, Knox County, laborer, did on the twenty seventh day of September 1816 within the township that the Indian title to the land is located and where at the time of the commission of the offense herein is charged did unlawfully and injuriously sell to an Indian ardent spirits. He is charged with selling the quantity of one gallon for the price of $1.50. Rocus is charged with doing this act against the peace and dignity of the U. S. and against the statutes. The jurors aforesaid upon their oath aforesaid do further present that the said Samuel Rocus, laborer, on the twenty forth day of September 1816, in Vincennes Township and said County at the place where the offense is charged, did sell 1 gallon of spirits for $1.50 to an Indian. The document is signed by Isaac Blackford, Prosecuting Attorney. The Indiana Territory, Knox County summons the Sheriff of Knox County to take Samuel Rocus and keep his body safe; The Sheriff is to bring Rocus to court before the judges on an indictment for trading with Indians without a license. The Sheriff of Knox County, Indiana is ordered October 3, 1816 by R. Buntin, Clerk to summon Joseph Barron and bring his body this instant before the judges of the Circuit Court. He to answer to a charge of contempt of court for failing to appear before the judges to give evidence. The Sheriff is ordered to take due action. The summons is dated February 25, 1817 with a charge of service and return being $.59. B. V. Beckes, Sheriff issues the summons. The jury finds the defendant not guilty and the case is dismissed.
