A $90 sale of property bond belonging to William Reed of Post St. Vincent in the County of Illinois unto Ralph Matson of the same place was filed. The payment was to be made in pounds of Virginia currency. The sale was in consequence of an agreement of sale and barter of lands which by the agreement of those present gave full alien release and confirmed unto him the said Ralph Matson. He was to have all rights to the title of and indirect use of the property, possessions, rents and profits of 400 acres or arpents of a certain tract of land on the east side of the White River on the waters of Clear Creek marked and improved in the fall of 1785. The land is for the use of Ralph Matson, who bound himself, his heirs, executors and administrators and firmly agrees to submit to the regulations of the law of the land the whole part of the land and every part thereof including ways, woods and waters. The document was signed May 16, 1786 by William Reed and was witnessed by John Filson, John Morrison and Ralph Matson of Vincennes, Knox County in consideration of 100 acres of land known as Matsons Station. William Reed by his Attorney Benjamin Reed bound himself for 100 acres of land as soon as the government assigns it over to William Reed for the bill of sale September 24, 1795. The document was witnessed by H. Vanderburgh, and Moses Decker. A bond from William Reed to Ralph Matson dated May 16, 1786 for land purchased on condition of payment. Payment was to be by flour in cask barrels, 100 gallons of whiskey at $1 a gallon to be delivered at the mouth of the Wabash in 1787. The bond was witnessed by William Reed but the name and seal is torn from the document. An promissory agreement was filed by William Reed of Post St. Vincent, County of Illinois. He was firmly bound into Ralph Matson for 200 pounds of Virginia money on May 16, 1787. The conditions of the bill are that William Reed his heirs, executors and administrators shall pay unto Ralph Matson, his attorney or heirs the just and full sum of 100 pounds of Virginia currency as follows: 100 gallons of good whiskey at $1 per gallon in good barrels or kegs that were to be delivered at the mouth of the Wabash in 1787. The bond is signed and sealed and delivered in the presence of John Filson and John Morrison. William Reed of Ft. St. Vincent of Illinois was held and firmly bound unto Ralph Matson for 200 pounds of Virginia currency on May 16, 1786. Witnesses to the bond are John Morrison and John Filson. Ralph Matson states he received the bond and $16 as a condition of the bond on July 20, 1787. A receipt was received of Samuel McClellan of William Reed for $200, 17 pounds of flour and 82 1/2 gallons of whiskey on August 8, 1787. The receipt was witnessed by Ralph Matson and James Bowie. A trespass and ejectment document was filed by Henry Pea, plaintiff against Ann Sturgart defendant on May 1795. This suit by the plaintiff was continued to the next term and a dedimus was granted on August 20, 1795 to take the deposition of Robert Daniels of Shelby County, Ky. and the deposition of William Briggs of Nelson County, Ky and John William of McClair County of Knox Territory. A bill of sale was presented May 16, 1786 and witnessed by John Filson and John Morrison and signed by William Reed. The bill of sale states that Robert Matson agrees to convey 100 acres, the same land he received of the government to William Reed. The document was witnessed by Moses Decker and Henry Vanderburgh. William Reed by his attorney Benjamin Reed presented that William Reed of Washington County Pa. is firmly held and bound unto Ralph Matson of Vincennes, Knox County the sum of 150 pounds of goods and lawful money of Virginia currency. The bill was signed and sealed September 24, 1795. The sale of the land was on the condition that a deed of conveyance for 100 acres of land known as Matson Station was to be issued. William Reed was to receive title of the land previously belonging to the U. S. The said Matson was to have his choice of what part of the said Station Tract he choose to take except the side joining Selvey. The agreement was witnessed on September 24, 1795 by H. Vanderburgh and Moses Decker. The agreement was signed William Reed by his attorney Benjamin Reed. Ralph Matson issues for value received all his rights of title claims and demands of the written instrument to Henry Pea on May 16, 1796. This was witnessed by Jonathan Conger, Mary Conger and Adam Glass. The land was granted by Governor Harrison on November 18, 1801 with 400 acres being surveyed in 1802 and patented on November 30, 1803 by Governor Harrison. William Reed is the assignee of R. Matson. The U.S. commands the Sheriff to summon William Reed to appear before the Chancellery Court the last Monday of August 1808. He was to answer to charges brought against him by Henry Pea. A $500 penalty was to be applied for nonappearance. The document was signed by Henry Hurst, Clerk of Chancellery Court on August 10, 1808. Samuel Hayes, Sheriff states that William Reed was not found. The Sheriff is is ordered to subpoena William Reed to appear before the Chancellor of said Territory at the Court of Chancery the last Monday of August 1810. He was to answer to the complaint by the heirs of Henry Pea. The heirs being John Pea, Abraham Pea, Jacob Pea, Daniel Pea, Joseph Michels with wife Liza, Peter Frederick with wife Polly and Peggy Pea. A $100 penalty was to be applied for nonappearance. The subpoena is dated August 13, 1810 and witnessed by H. Hurst, Clerk Court. John McCandless, Sheriff states William Reed was not found. The court having examined the bill, answers and exhibits did order and direct that the complainants bill was dismissed and the defendant was to recover his costs and charges. |
