A summons dated November 16, 1813 is issued to the Sheriff of Knox County. He is to summon Samuel Parr and Maria, a black woman, to the Court of Common Pleas on the 16th instant to give evidence on behalf of the United States to the Grand Jury. A $100 penalty for each will be applied if they do not appear. The summons was witnessed by R. Buntin, Clerk and executed by B. V. Beckes, Sheriff of Knox County. The cost to serve is listed as $.79 and return as $.09. The Sheriff is commanded on February 15, 1815 by Isaac Blackford to convey to prison Joseph Latreff, a man of color, charged, and Sarah, a woman of color, with having persuaded the said Sarah to steal large sums of money from said Whitlock and receiving the same from said Sarah knowing it to be stolen. The said Joseph having failed to give security for his appearance at the Circuit Court is sentenced to prison. The keeper of the said prison is commanded to receive into the prison the said prisoner until he is delivered to the law. Charges for taking unto custody the said Joseph are $.50, commitment $.37 1/2, provisions furnished from February 16 to the 6th of March 1815 is $.25 @ 18 days for total cost of $4.50. Total amount of the prisoner cost is $5.37 1/2. A summons to the Sheriff of Knox County is issued February 25, 1815. He is to take John Ewing, General W. Johnston, Josette Barron, Isaac Fuller John Cherry, Andrew Golding, William Golding, Peter Winchell, G. C. Smith, James Harmon, John Myers, Ambrose Whitlock, Jonathan Marney and Sarah, a servant woman of Captain Whitlocks to court. They are to appear before the judges of the Circuit Court the 1st Monday of March next. They are to give evidence on behalf of the U. S. to the Grand Jury. A $1500 fine will be applied for failure to appear. Witness to the summons is Robert Buntin. B. V. Beckes states he executed the writ on the following: John Ewing, G. W. Johnston, Josette Barron, John Myers, Captain Whitlock and his girl. The balance of witnesses not found per William Prince, Attorney for the U. S. An indictment of the Circuit Court was filed during the March 1815 term. The jurors for the U. S. of Knox County upon their oath present that Latreff commonly called Joseph Latrief of Vincennes, Knox County, did on the 7th of December 1814 with force and arms take two hundred silver half dollars in the value of $100. These coins were the goods and chattels of Ambrose Whitlock. This being the value of nine hundred dollars of goods and chattels. They are charged with feloniously stealing, taking and carrying away against the peace and dignity of the U. S. coins not belonging to them. The jurors do present by William Prince, Prosecuting Attorney, that Joe Latrief also called Joseph Latrief on the 7th day of December 1814 did take 200 silver 1/2 dollars and nine hundred dollars parcel of goods and chattels that he carried away against the statues of the law. A subpoena is issued March 9, 1815 to the Sheriff of Knox County to bring A. Whitlock, Sgt. Anderson and Sarah, woman of color, to court to give evidence on behalf of the U. S. vs Joe Latrief on an indictment for larceny found by the Grand Jury. A $100 nonappearance fee will be issued if they do not appear. Witness to the subpoena is Robert Buntin, Clerk. The summons is executed by B. V. Beckes, Sheriff with a serve and return cost being $1.21 1/2. The Sheriff is commanded on March 8, 1815 to summon Simon Vandersal to appear before the judges of the Circuit Court. He is to give evidence on behalf of the U. S. against Joseph Latrief on an indictment. A $100 fee for nonappearance will be applied. The summons was executed by B. V. Beckes, Sheriff for a cost of $.46 1/2. The Sheriff is commanded on March 10, 1815 to take Elias McNamee, John Badolet, Nathaniel Ewing before the judges of the Circuit Court now sitting. They are to give evidence on behalf of Joseph Latref, defendant, on an indictment of larceny. A $100 penalty for failure to appear will be applied. Witness to the summons is Robert Buntin. B. V. Beckes executed the summons on Elias McNamee and John Badolett and N. Ewing was not found. The Sheriff is commanded to summon A. Whitlock, Sgt. Anderson, Sarah a servant girl of color belong to Captain Whitlock, George a man of color, Simon Vannorsdal, Moses Rollins, and George Glan. They are to give evidence on behalf of the U. S. on an indictment of Larceny. A $100 penalty for nonappearance will be applied. R. Buntin Clerk was witness and the summons was executed by James Jordan, Deputy Sheriff at a cost of $2.34 1/2 for serving and return. A recognizance bond is issued March 11, 1815 for Joe or Joseph Latreff, William McIntosh, and General W. Johnston. They are to appear before James McCall and acknowledge themselves to be indebted to the U. S. in the sum of $300. The debt is to be levied by goods, chattels, lands and tenements to the use of said U. S. They are to appear in court the 1st Monday in June next and answer to an indictment on larceny. The bond is signed by James B. McCall during the June 1815 term. The Sheriff is summoned to bring Simon Vandersal to court. He is to give evidence to the grand jury. The summons is witnessed by R. Buntin, Clerk and executed by B. V. Beckes with service and return being $.46 1/2. The Sheriff is summoned on May 18, 1815 to bring Simon Vandersall, Moses Rolling, and George Glan to court the 1st Monday of June to give evidence on behalf of the U. S. against Joe Latriff in an indictment for larceny. A $100 fee for nonappearance will be applied. R. Buntin, Clerk witnessed the summons and it was executed on Moses Rolling, Vandersall and Glan was not found. Service, miles and return being $1.18 1/2. A summons to the Sheriff of Knox County is issued May 18, 1815. He is to summon Elias McNamee, John Badolet, Nathaniel Ewing to court the first Monday of June next. They are to give evidence on behalf of Joe Latriff, defendant on an indictment of Larceny. A $100 penalty for nonappearance will be applied. Witness to the summons is R. Buntin, Clerk. The summons was executed by B. V. Beckes, Sheriff with a cost to serve and return being $1.21 1/2. Beckes Sheriff of Knox County. He was to bring A. Whitlock, Sgt. Anderson, Sarah, a servant girl of color, of Captain Whitlock, and George, a man of color, to court the first Monday of June next. They are to give evidence on behalf of the U. S. against Joseph Latrieff. A $100 penalty for nonappearance will be issued. They are to give evidence on behalf of the U. S. against Joseph Latriff. A $100 penalty will be applied for nonappearance. The summons is witnessed by R. Buntin, Clerk and executed by B. V. Beckes. Pickard and McIntosh are served and Young is not found. Cost to serve and return is listed as $.84. A summons is issued June 5, 1815 to the Sheriff of Knox County. He is to bring Robert Buntin Jr., and Laurent Bazadone to court the first Monday of June instant. They are to give evidence on behalf of Joe Latrief. A $100 penalty will be applied for nonappearance. The summons was witnessed by R. Buntin and executed with the cost of serving being $.84. A cost of court bill is filed for the March 1815 term-June 1815 term in the amount of $238.45 1/2. |
