United States vs Margarette Taylor

Description: An indictment is filed during the March 1815 term. Jurors of the U. S. county of Knox upon their oath present that Margaret Taylor, a spinster, of Vincennes Township on the 31st day of January 1815 took one drape tablecloth valued at $8, 2 pieces of blanket valued at $9. 1 flannel petticoat valued at $3, one checked shirt valued at $3, 2 pieces of linen valued at $2, 1 handkerchief valued at $1. The items all goods and chattels of Thomas Coulter. One pair of stockings belonging to Thomas Jones valued at $2.50. The indictment was filed by William Prince, Prosecuting Attorney for Knox County. During the March term a summons was sent to Thomas Coulter and wife to give evidence to the Grand Jury. R. Buntin served as witness. The writ was executed on William Coulter but Thomas Coulter was not found per James Jordan, Deputy Sheriff. The Sheriff is commanded to summon Margaret Mulholland to appear before the judges in the Circuit Court on the first Monday in March. She is to give evidence to the grand jury by order of Thomas Coulter. A $100 penalty will be applied for nonappearance. The summons is filed March 2, 1815 by R. Buntin, Clerk. B. V. Beckes, Sheriff states Margaret not found. William Prince, Prosecuting Attorney comes to court and says that the action against Margaret may not be maintained because she was not baptized as Mary Magdalene and has only been called Margaret Taylor. Therefore the want of a sufficient plea he prays judgment. Mary Magdalen Taylor whom the indictment is for defends herself and says she has never been called Mary Margaret and has only ever been known as Margaret Taylor and she asks for abatement. The reply is filed by Floyd. P. Q. A summons to the Sheriff is filed. He is to summon Fanny Curtain and Polly Coulter to court the 1st Monday of June, next to give evidence on the behalf of Margaret Taylor on an indictment for larceny. A $100 penalty will be applied for nonappearance. The writ is witnessed by R. Buntin, Clerk on May 18, 1815. The writ was executed on Polly Coulter. Fan Curtain was not found per B. V. Beckes, Sheriff. A subpoena to the Sheriff is issued. He is to bring Margarette Mulholland to court the first Monday of June instant to give evidence on behalf of Margaret Taylor, defendant on a plea of Larceny. A $100 penalty will be applied for nonappearance. The Sheriff appoints Dan McClure, Esq. to serve the writ which was filed June 5, 1815 by R. Buntin. The sheriff is commanded on June 8, 1815 to summon Lucy Stout to appear before the judges of the Circuit Court on Thursday June 8, instant to give evidence on behalf of the U. S. against Margaret Taylor on an indictment of larceny. A $100 penalty will be applied for nonappearance. The writ was executed by H. J. Mills, Assisting Constable with service and return being $.46 1/2. A subpoena is issued to the Sheriff to bring Mrs. Decker, wife of Isaac Decker, to court the 8th day of June, instant. She is to give evidence against Margarette Taylor on an indictment for larceny. A $100 penalty for nonappearance will be applied if she does not appear. The writ is filed June 8, 1815 and executed by Humpry Almy, Assisting Constable. Service and return is listed as $.46.
