Description: |
This file contains the documents related to the suit that Louis Dupres and his wife Therese brought against Jean Bte. Drouet dit Richardville and his wife Victoria for $4,000 in a case of slander. The summons calls for the sheriff of Knox County to secure and bring the Richardvilles before the judges of the Circuit Court on the first Monday of March 1815. The summons, dated November 9, 1814, was witnessed and signed by court clerk Robert Buntin and executed by sheriff Benjamin Beckes at a cost of $.84 cents. The court cost bill totaled $8.37. In the complaint Louis and Therese Dupres complained of Jean and Victoria Richardville a plea of trespass in a case of slander. It was noted in the complaint that on December 16, 1814, Victoria Richardville did, while speaking in French, accuse Therese Dupres of being a worm eaten whore, a hog thief, and a common or public whore. These malicious and defamatory words greatly hurt and injured the good name of Therese Dupres. The complaint was signed by General Washington Johnston. In the Minute Book of the Court of Common Pleas, 1811-1817, on page 133, it states that on March 9, 1815, the plaintiffs appeared by General Washington Johnston, their attorney, and the defendant in proper person, and the cause was dismissed and the defendant ordered to pay costs. |
