During the August 1813 Term, the jurors for the U. S. and body of the County of Knox hear the case of U. S. vs John F. Thompson. The jurors are presented that John F. Thompson, late of Busseron Township of Knox County, blacksmith, on the first day of July 1813 at Vincennes Township did severely, wickedly, and maliciously offer and tender unto Benjamin Beckes, Esq., then and now, Sheriff of Knox County money while on discharges of his duties as Sheriff of Knox County. That while on discharges of his duties as Sheriff he offered unto him the sum of $5. Thompson is accused of offering the fee to Benjamin for a knock off on a certain track of land which he the said Benjamin by virtue of a Writ of Venditione, expenses is then selling for what the said John F was then bidding. The writ is signed by William Prince, Prosecuting Attorney. John F. Thompson defends himself and says he is not guilty and puts himself before the country. A capias to the Sheriff of Knox County is issued. He is commanded to take John F. Thompson before the judges of the Court of Common Pleas at Vincennes the third Monday of November on an indictment preferred against him at the August 1913 Term of Court for bribery. The clerk received fees. The clerk received fees from William Dunnica and $5 fine per Robert Buntin, Clerk of Knox County, In. A subpoena is issued to the corner of Knox County to bring Benjamin Beckes, Sheriff to court the third Monday of November to give evidence on behalf of the U. S. against John F. Thompson on an indictment of bribery brought against him at the August 1813 Term of Court of Common Pleas. A $100 fee will be applied if he does not appear. The document is filed October 25, 1813 with R. Buntin as witness. A subpoena was handed to B. V. Beckes by the Clerk and returned by me per B. V. Beckes, Sheriff. The Cost of court fees was filed from August 1813 to November 1813 as being $21.99 1/2. Jury finds the defendant guilty of bribery. |
