The file contains five documents related to the suit Richard Woolen brought against Jesse Slawson for the use of Jonathan Purcell. On August 20, 1810, Jesse Slawson signed a Promissory Note to Richard Woolen for forty-five dollars for valued received. He was to repay the note within twelve months. The note was witnessed by Jonathan Purcell. During the November Term 1811, a Complaint by Richard Woolen for the use of Jonathan Purcell was filed by H [Henry] Hurst, atty. The Complaint stated that Jesse Slawson, in custody, should render the sum of forty-five dollars which he owed and had unjustly detained. That on August 20, 1810, he had signed a Promissory Note and he had refused to pay it and asked for damages of twenty dollars. On December 10, 1811, R [Robert] Buntin, Clerk CPKC, issued a Summons for Jesse Slawson. He was to be taken so that he would appear in the Court of Common Pleas on the seventh of December 1811 to answer to Woolen of a debt of forty-five dollars and damages of twenty dollars. On the verso side, Bail required. H. Hurst P.Q. No time to serve. John I Neely, D. Shff. A second Summons was issued on December 21, 1811. Slawson was to appear at court the third day of the term now sitting. On the verso side, Bail required. H. Hurst, P.Q; The Summons was served by John I Neely, D. Shff with $1.51 added for serving. On December 23, 1811, Jesse Slawson and Peter Jones posted bond of one hundred dollars to ensure Slawson would appear in court on December 23, 1811. The document was signed by Slawson and Jones and witnessed by John I. Neely, D. Shff, KC. According to the Minute Book of the Knox County Court of Common Pleas, 1811 -1817, page 55: The Plaintiff appeared by his attorney, Henry Hurst, the Defendant did not appear. On a motion, it was considered that the Plaintiff recover of the Defendant the sum of forty-five dollars with interest from the twentieth day of August, 1811, and with costs and charges related to the suit. |
