Description: The file contains documents related to the indictment of Joseph Edeline (Edelin) for the assault and battery of Margrette (Margaret) Cardinal in 1811. On March 30, 1811, Joseph Edeline posted Recognizance Bond of $40, while Toussaint Deneau ( Danion, Denoyou) post bond of $20.00 to ensure Joseph Edeline would appear before the judges of the Court of Common Pleas the last Monday in July 1811 to answer to the United States for a plea of assault and battery on Margrette Cardinal. Wm. Prince, JPKC signed the bond document. During the July Term 1811, Thomas Randolph, Atty. General IT; filed a Complaint that stated, Joseph Edelin (Edeline), yeoman, February 1, 1811 with force and arms upon Margaret (Margrette) Cardinal, spinster, did beat, wound and ill treat so that her life was greatly despaired of. On the verso side of the Complaint, True Bill, Thos. Barid Jr. We of the Jury find the Defendant not Guilty. P. Beckes, foreman. Also on the verso, Subpoena Margaret (Margrette) Cardinal and her husband in behalf of the U.S. returnable to next Court Common Pleas August 7, 1811 Randolph Atty. Gen. On August 6, 1811, Robert Buntin, Clerk, issued a Summons for Margrette Cardinal and Francois Cardinal to testify on behalf of the U.S. to the Grand Jury. The Summons was executed by Ch. (Christian) Graeter. A Summons was issued for Joseph Edeline to appear on December 16, 1811 to answer to the U.S. for assault and battery against Margrette Cardinal in Indictment. The Summons was issued by R. Buntin, Clerk on December 2, 1811. On the verso side, Joseph Edeline cant be found. John Neely, D. Sheriff. Summons were also issued by R. Buntin, Clerk, for Margrette and Francois Cardinal to appear at court on December 16, 1811. They were to give evidence on the Indictment of Joseph Edeline. The Summons was executed by John Neely, D. Sheriff with court cost added of $4.80 1/2 for serving and traveling 3 miles. According to the Minuet Book of the Knox County Court of Common Pleas, 1811- 1817, pages 13, 29, 34 and 35; Edeline was Indicted for assault and battery of Margrette Cardinal and was summonsed to Court. Edeline and Danion (Deneau) did not appear and bond was forfeited. It was ordered that a capias was issued against Edeline. During the November Term 1811, the Plaintiff appeared by Gen. W. Johnston and the Defendant by Henry Hurst. The Defendant pleaded not guilty. A jury was empanelled and consisted of: Parmenas Beckes, foreman, Charles Allen, David Lilley, James Lindsey, Charles Booth, Fredrick Mehel, Michael Thorn, Richard Price, Abraham Decker, William Bailey, Thomas Hardin, and William Francis. The jury found for the Defendant.
