Description:	Court transcript of the suit Jack Butler, a man of color, brought against the partners in Charles Smith Vincennes Steam Mill Company, for failure to pay a debt. April 12, 1822, a writ was witnessed by Robert Buntin, to the sheriff, John Decker, to have the following: Nathaniel Ewing, Benjamin Parke, Willis Fellows, John D. Hay, William Harlow, Wilson Lagrow and George Ewing, partners in the Charles Smith Vincennes Steam Mill Company, at Court to answer to the Plaintiffs plea of Trespass for damages of two thousand dollars. The writ was executed on N. Ewing and John D. Hay on April 22 and Willis Fellows and George Ewing on April 24. John Brunner and David Brown acknowledged themselves bail for Nathaniel Ewing and John D. Hay. In the complaint Jack Butler filed by his attorney, Anthony Frazer, the Defendants were indebted for a sum of one thousand eight hundred seventy-seven dollars and thirty-seven and one half cents for work and labor done by him and his servants with horses, carts, carriages and boats As well as for large quantities of timber, firewood and quantities of stone, sold and delivered. During the June Term 1822: The Plaintiff was represented by Anthony Frazer and the Defendants were represented by Moses Tabbs. Orders were given to take depositions and the case continued to the next term. September Term 1822: The Defendants represented by Charles Dewey responded that they had not made such an agreement and put themselves on the country. March Term 1823: A trial occurred with the following jurors: David Collins, John Hill, John Widner, John Young, William Curry, Francis W. Davis, Fred Watson, John Welton, Robert McClure, Jonathan Hornback, William Hart and Robert Leman. John Davis, foreman reported they found for the Plaintiff, five hundred and thirty-five dollars and fifty-eight cents in damages. Arguments were made regarding Depositions of James Nabb and Alexander Wilber. The verdict upheld that the Plaintiff recover of the Defendants, five hundred thirty-five dollars and Fifty-eight and one half cents in damages with interest, costs and charges for the suit.
