This is an all bisque Japanese black baby doll manufactured in either the 1930s or 1940s (although they were most popular in the 1940s). The body is marked Japan. The head is bisque and the hair has three pigtails (pickanniny braids). The eyes are round and painted white with a black center. The arms and legs are movable. The doll is dressed in a plaid dress and ribbons (red and orange). The doll is in good condition and stands 4 inches (10.16 cm) tall. |

This doll was donated by Tammy Wilson. This was a novelty store item popular in the late 1940s. They were sold for $.10 each and were made in four different sizes. |
