Nicholas Filbeck Portrait, 1861

Description: A portrait of Nicholas Filbeck during his time in service with the 32nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. Filbeck falsified his age to join the 32nd in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1861. He was wounded, captured and returned to Terre Haute after a short stay in a Union hospital. He later served as Post Master in Terre Haute. The portrait is a digitally enlarged image. Filbeck is wearing a full Union Army uniform and hat. He has a brass belt buckle with the letters U.S. stamped onto it. His belt also has a bayonet holster and a cartridge box on his right hip. His coat is closed with brass buttons . He is holding a rifle with bayonet fixed in his right hand.
