Second Lieutenant John Smith Talley Belt, 1862

Description: A belt worn by Second Lieutenant John Smith Talley during his service in the Union Army. The belt is made of tanned leather dyed a dark brown. Attached by steel hooks is a set of straps for holding a saber. The belt also has a leather cartridge case attached to it via leather loops. The belt is buckled by a metal catch at one end and a brass plated GAR buckle on the other end. The buckle features a balled eagle holding a banner featuring the Latin motto e pluribus unum or Out of many, one. The eagle is clutching a laurel and three arrows. Below the eagle is a large laurel leaf set which most likely had silver plating at one time. 1862. This belt held a Model M-1860 Artillery officers saber.
