Description: |
A typescript of a letter from Kemper to his brother. June 5, 1861. Kemper describes an overnight march to the town of Philippi, Virginia and the opening of the battle fought there. Union forces attacked the town in the early morning and scattered the Confederate troops defending the town. The majority of the Confederate soldiers escaped due to only three of the four roads going into Philippi being held by Union forces. The Union expected an immediate counter attack, which Kemper was on duty to watch for but it did not come during his shift. |
