Lamp, wick

Description: This artifact is a brass wick lamp manufactured by the U.S. Tool Company, Vincennes, Indiana, and used by coal miners in underground coal mines. The wick lamp used kerosene and a paraffin like substance called sunshine. The miner would light the wick and the sunshine slowed the burning of the kerosene and prolonged the illumination. Miners purchased their own paraffin and made the wicks. These lamps were worn on a miners cap or carried. They were extremely dangerous.
