This artifact shows a Koehler safety lamp used by coal miners to test for gas in coal mines. The safety lamp featured an enclosed flame with a fine impervious mesh screen. If the lamp dimmed when raised to the ceiling it indicated too much gas and not enough oxygen in the mine. |
