Description: |
This was the first parish church, built in a clearing in the woods, at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, in 1837 or 1838 by Father Buteux for Bishop Simon Brute. A Brother Joseph, CSC, who was living at Highland near Vincennes, Indiana, in 1887, and who had taught children of the first settlers prior to the arrival of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin in October 1840, corrected the sketch which had been drawn from description. The church burned down in February 1840, eight months before the arrival of Saint Mother Theodore. This drawing was copied by Sister Leopoldine Burke (b. April 1, 1872, d. Oct. 30, 1949). |
