Daniels, Jr.Governor of the State of IndianaMitchell E. Daniels Jr. was elected as the 49th Governor of theState of Indiana in 2004, in his first bid for any elected office.Governor Daniels came from a successful career in business andgovernment, holding numerous top management positions in both theprivate and public sectors. His work as CEO of the Hudson Instituteand President of Eli Lilly and Companys North AmericanPharmaceutical Operations taught him the business skills he brought tostate government. He also has served as Chief of Staff to SenatorRichard Lugar, Senior Advisor to President Ronald Reagan andDirector of the Office of Management and Budget under PresidentGeorge W. Bush.Daniels first legislative success created the public-private IndianaEconomic Development Corporation to replace a failing state bureaucracyin the mission of attracting new jobs. In each of its first four yearsof existence, the agency broke all previous records for new jobs in thestate, and was associated with more than $18 billion of new investment.The state is now near the top of every national ranking of businessattractiveness.In 2005, Daniels led the state to its first balanced budget in eightyears and, without a tax increase, transformed the $600 million deficithe inherited into an annual surplus of $370 million within a year. In2008, the governor was named Public Official of the Year by the independentmagazine Governing for his achievements as governor. He alsoreceived the Manhattan Institutes 2008 Innovator Award for his creativepublic policy initiatives.These innovations included the 2006lease of the Indiana TollRoad, the largest privatization of public infrastructure in the UnitedStates to date, generating nearly $4 billion for reinvestment in thestates record breaking 10-year transportation and infrastructure program.The 2007 year saw the enactment of the Healthy Indiana Plan toprovide healthcare coverage for uninsured Hoosier adults, and asweeping property tax reform in 2008 resulted in the biggest tax cut inIndiana history.The governor was re-elected in 2008 to a second and final term.He earned a bachelors degree from the Woodrow Wilson School ofPublic and International Affairs at Princeton University in 1971 and hislaw degree from Georgetown University in 1979.Daniels and his wife Cheri have four daughters: Meagan, Melissa,Meredith and Maggie.4Honorary DegreeHonorary Doctor of Humane LettersJeff BelskusExecutive Vice President and Chief Financial OfficerHulman & Company and Its SubsidiariesJeff Belskus is the Executive Vice President and Chief FinancialOfficer for Hulman & Company, Terre Haute, Indiana, and its subsidiaries,including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) and theIndy Racing League.The IMS is home to the Indianapolis 500, the Brickyard 400 stockcar race, and the Indianapolis MotoGP motorcycle event. Hulman &Company, one of the oldest incorporated entities in Indiana dating backto 1850, has owned the historic speedway since December of 1945.Hulman manufactures and distributes Clabber Girl Baking Powder,and has diverse interests in energy, banking, communications and realestate.Belskus, 49, joined the organization in 1987 as controller and waselevated to treasurer in 1989. Already functioning as the companyschief financial officer, he was promoted to vice president in late 1991and named executive vice president in January 1994.In this role with Hulman & Company, Jeff is part of the corporateexecutive office and a member of the executive team responsible for theoverall company leadership and executive strategy. He is focused onproviding leadership at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Hulmanrelated organizations to further their position as international leaders inmotor sports entertainment.Belskus graduated with honors from Indiana State University in1981 with a bachelors degree in accounting, and earned his CertifiedPublic Accountant designation in 1985. He also attended graduateschool at Indiana University. He is a native of Terre Haute and graduatedfrom Terre Haute South High School in 1978.Belskus professional affiliations include Financial ExecutivesInstitute, American Institute of CPAs and Indiana CPA Society.Additionally, he is a member of the Board of Trustees of Rose-HulmanInstitute of Technology, where he serves as Treasurer and chairs theBusiness Affairs Committee, as well as the Indiana State UniversityFoundation Board, where he is a member of the Audit Committee.Belskus is also on the Board of Directors of the Morris Plan Companyof Terre Haute and is a Trustee for The Nature Conservancy of Indiana.Jeff and his wife, Debra (Debbie), also of Terre Haute, reside inZionsville, Indiana. The Royse tradition on the Board continues yet today as John N. Royse still is anactive member.The award consists of a bronze medal and cash honorarium to be made at commencementeach year to the graduating senior who, in the opinion of the faculty and administrative staff,is considered to be our most outstanding graduate based on academic achievement, studentleadership, participation in co-curricular activities, and general campus citizenship. The recipientof the Royse Award must be nominated by either a classmate or a member of the faculty oradministrative staff.The Moench CommendationHerman A. Moench graduated from our school, then called Rose Polytechnic Institute, in 1929.He served Rose as associate vice president and professor of electrical engineering for over fivedecades, during which time he was an inspiring mentor and role model. Herman helpedshape the Rose-Hulman values that we all cherish today, including putting the student first,remaining humble while striving for excellence, and encouraging close student-teacher relationships.Though Herman never married, he had a lifelong love affair with one great lady: aschool named Rose Poly.In 1980 the first Moench Commendation was awarded to the most Moench-Like graduatingsenior. This is a person who is Not just a good student in the upper half of their class, butalso has demonstrated exemplary character in the eyes of their peers and teachers; a personwho has been influential in making RHIT a better place.
