Thomas well at Lodi Park, 1930s.

Description: This is a black and white photograph of the artesian well also known as the Thomas Well in southwestern Fountain County, Indiana in the 1930s. Salt was produced there from the 1820s. In 1865, the Wabash Valley Petroleum and Mining Company drilled for oil on property owned by William Wann but instead tapped artesian water. Norbourn Thomas bought the property in 1868 which included the artesian well and continued to produce salt which was shipped out on the Wabash and Erie Canal. Mary Safely, wife of Major John J. Safely purchased the property in 1883, building a house on the hill above the well and a resort was opened with a pool and private baths for people to take the waters. The Lodi Mineral Water Sanatorium Company was formed in the 1920s and facilities expanded to include a skating rink (1931) and playgrounds. This item was donated by Charles Davis.
