Manwarring basin Wabash and Erie Canal, Parke County, Indiana

Description: This is a color photograph of the site of Manwarring Basin which was a boat turnaround on the Wabash and Erie Canal in Parke County, Indiana. It was located 4/10s of a mile north of aqueduct #11 on the north side of Sugar Creek near West Union, Indiana. In the foreground is the canal opening which fed water from the canal into the turnaround while to the left can be seen the canal dike. It was called Manwarrings basin after Robert Manwarring (1791-1848) who participated in the building of the canal. He owned a grist mill where the West Union Covered Bridge now stands and a saw mill where flatboats were built. Manwarring Basin became a trade center with the opening of the canal in 1848. This item was donated by Charles Davis.
