Coffin (William G.) house cistern Parke County, Indiana.

Description: This is a color photograph of the remains of a cistern at the William. G. Coffin house in Penn Township, Parke County, Indiana. The lined cistern was located at the back of the house which was built in the early 1850s near Foundry Hollow, 2 miles west of Annapolis. William Garten (1811-1904 ) was the son of Elihu and Jane Starbuck Coffin. He married Samira (1812-1883) daughter of George and Dorcas Stanley Hunt. Coffin ran foundries and dug clay for operations in Foundry Hollow, Coke Oven Hollow, Aetna and Stumptown and potteries in Annapolis. He served as Indiana state representative from 1842-1844 and Indiana state senator from 1844-1847. The house then owned by T. C. Rockwell burned in the 1930s. This item was donated by Charles Davis.
