Description: |
This is a color postcard of Turkey Run State Park showing the Narrows Covered Bridge in the foreground and the Salmon Lusk home. Turkey Run, named for the wild turkeys that would congregate in the canyons or runs in winter for warmth, was Indianas second state park established in 1916. Salmon Lusk had received the land for service rendered in the Battle of Tippecanoe. His first home was a log cabin built in 1822. In 1841, he and his sons built the brick house made from bricks made on-site. A grist mill was built in 1826. When his son John passed in 1915, the land was put up for sale. Richard Lieber and the State Parks Commission managed to raise the funds necessary to purchase the land from the Hoosier Veneer lumber company and preserve the natural beauty of the land. This item was donated by Perry Neet. |
