Hoover Sanatorium of Terre Haute, Indiana

Description: Full page advertisement in the African American newspaper, Terre Haute Bulletin, for the Hoover Sanatorium as being one of the two Negro Hospitals in Indiana to be accredited by the American Medical Association. J. J. Hoover, MD (1881-1953) graduated from Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee, and began practicing medicine in Terre Haute in 1923. He opened and operated Hoover Sanitarium, the first hospital for African Americans in Terre Haute until his death. The hospital continued under the direction of his son until 1959.
