Knox County court record for Lasselle vs. Charles Vulcan, 1822

Description: Folder 2968 in Box 53 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House contains seven documents in the case of Lasselle vs. Charles (Vulcan). Lasselle sued Charles and his wife Betsy, people of color for breach of their indentured servant covenant of eight years. Charles and Betsy had signed the indenture in April of 1818. In 1822 they left Lasselle without his permission. In the suit Lasselle asked for damages of $500.00 for loss of their services. Documents consist of Lasselle’s complaint, statement from the defendant’s attorney, declaration of Charles and Betsy, the indenture agreement, writ and bail statements.
