Knox County court record for Dickson & Wilson vs. Smirl, 1822

Description: Folder 2620 in Box 46 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds four documents in the case of Dickson & Wilson vs. Smirl, 1822. This case is tied to folder 2512 (in Box 44) Beamon vs. Smirl, and folders 2400 & 2405 (in Box 42) Dickson & Wilson vs. Beamon & Reilley and Smirl vs. Beamon. All of these cases were about the illegal sale by Smirl of “Nathaniel” whom Smirl claimed to own when in fact Nathaniel was a man of free man of color. The documents include the court filing by Dickson and Wilson, the plea of James Smirl, the writ of habeas corpus and special bail for Smirl, and a promissory note to Smirl from Carter Beamon. On the back of the filing document is the jury finding in favor of the plaintiffs. In this case Dickson and Wilson are trying to get payment from Smirl on a promissory note originally written to Smirl by Carter Beamon, but transferred by Smirl to Dickson and Wilson.
