Knox County court record for Laselle vs. Hoffman, 1806

Description: Folder 1013 in Box 16 of Knox County Circuit Court records at the Knox County Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House holds numerous items in the case of Anton Laselle vs. Joseph Hoffman dealing with two promissory notes. In one case, Hoffman (represented by General Washington Johnston), a Black servant of LaSalle argues that a promissory note signed in 1806 lending Hoffman Forty-four pounds and three shillings (approx. $110.37) is void because “a certain law of the said territory of Indiana entitled ‘a law concerning servants’ adopted form the Virginia code and published at Vincennes the twenty second day of September one thousand eight hundred and three by William Henry Harrison Governor….It is declared ‘that all contracts between master and servant during the time of their service shall be void.’” The folder holds numerous documents with various numbers of pages. They range in date from 1806-1811. One is bound in ribbons and one is in French. Some reference Detroit. The documents include memoranda, bonds, summonses, complaints by Laselle, motions, bail documents etc. It appears that the court found for the plaintiff.
