Knox County probate record for George B. Smith or Smyth, 1847

Description: A folder containing probate records for George Smith (Smyth) is housed in the Probate Records section, Box 44, at the Knox County (IN) Public Library’s McGrady-Brockman House. In a renunciation filed April 7, 1847 Elizabeth Smith, widow of George Smith cedes administration to Michael B. McCormick. A hand-written bond of the same date shows this to be the case. Notices in the Vincennes Gazette dated April 8, 1847 advertise an administrator’s sale and include an administrator’s notice claiming the estate to be solvent. Another Vincennes Gazette clipping dated October 3, 1850 states the estate to be insolvent and reports a petition to sell real estate naming “heirs at law” as Elizabeth Shippey, Edward Shippey, Jane Smith, William Smith, Joseph Smith, Sarah Smith, Samuel W, Smith, Sarah McCormick and Michael R. McCormick. Also included in this file are administrator’s accounts, an estate inventory with accompanying bill of sale and affidavits. Not pictured in this post are numerous bills, receipts and claims against the estate.
