Benjamin III became the tenth president of Indiana StateUniversity on July 1, 2000. Prior to coming to ISU, President Benjamin served as vice presidentfor academic affairs at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia, from 1995 to 2000. Hewas dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Studies at the University of Arkansas atLittle Rock from 1988 to 1995 and dean of the College of Fine Arts, UA‐LR from 1984‐1988. Healso served as acting dean of the College of Fine Arts and chair of the department of art, UA‐LR,from 1983‐1984. Dr. Benjamin graduated from Emory University in 1966 with a bachelor of artsdegree in the history of art. In 1973, he earned his Ph.D. in art history from the University ofNorth Carolina at Chapel Hill. His dissertation focused on The Empathetic Relation of Observerto Image in 15th Century Flemish Painting. Dr. Benjamin is married to Wieke van der Weijden,who earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Leiden University, The Netherlands. The Benjaminshave two grown children: a daughter, Saskia Jansje, and son, Lloyd William. Dr. Benjaminserved as president of Indiana State University until 2008 and is now a faculty member in theDepartment of Art and Design.Scope and Contents: The President Lloyd Benjamin III records contains internal, external, andinternational correspondence internal and published reports and the drafts of some of thosereports agendas and statistics among other materials. The collection covers the years 1995‐2008 with most of the material covering the years of Benjamins presidency 2000‐2008. Thematerial covers topics of importance from the presidential tenure, giving insight into the manytransitions that the university experienced in the first decade of the new millennium. In thattime, the university instituted many changes with the evolution of technology and its impact onhigher education. The collection consists of the working files on projects and relationships withthe public, the government, and the partners. It includes a number of publications and drafts.Arrangement: North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Accreditation Documents. Thesedocuments bracket the Benjamin presidency by describing the visit of the NCA beforeBenjamin became president and a visit in 2007. Annual Reports. This series includes copies of official annual reports of the university,the office of the president, and academic and administrative units from 1999 to 2007but also includes working papers used to create those reports. Budgets. This series describes the process of creating budgets, both annual and biennial,for the university. Prominent are presentations form academic and administrative unitson campus to President Benjamin, supplying him with information to make budgetdecisions. |
