Description: crippled for a long time, since thelibrary has become the general laboratory, or workshop of the school. Manyof the books could not be replaced atany reasonable cost, inasmuch as theyare out of print and so rare as to bescarcely obtainable. These facts, aswell as actual experience in the loss ofone library, induced the board to plana fire-proof building. Stone, brick,tile, cement, iron and glass are the elements of construction from foundationto roof, wood being used for finishingpurposes only. The bookstacks are alsoof iron, steel and glass.During the first eighteen years ofthe institutions existence less thanfive thousand volumes were collected,all of which were destroyed by fire inthe spring of 1888.
