Description: THE NORMAL ADVANCE133Normal where she belongs among the otherleading institutions of learning of this state. Ishould think that the entire student and alumnibody should be heartily in favor of this moveand should support it liberally.Respectfully,James F. Mackell.Mr. Editor: In looking over the AdvanceI find many interesting articles and valuableinformation. Students look and wait impatiently for the next issue of the paper. Theywant the reports of the social functions, of theclass games, of the varsity games, of the happenings of special interest that take place inchapel or in the different class rooms duringthe month.Plenty of interesting and valuable materialis available every day that ought to be beforeevery student before it gets stale or ridiculously out of order. Now, you know, that ourpaper (Advance) is our only means throughwhich such material can reach the studentbody. Our paper is good, as it is, but it doesnot appear frequently enough. It is as thestage coach of old, which would carry the mailfrom town to town getting it there as soon aspossible, but not soon enough at that. Justthink for a moment how such a means had itbeen continued would have retarded civilization. Just so with our school paper. We havea student body which must be united in orderto work efficiently. Now let us have a paper which will give usnews of our school at least once each week. Iam sure that the circulation of the paper wouldbe increased three fold should such a changebe made. Thus by increasing the number ofreaders the creation of a common school spiritwould be inevitable
the student body wouldbecome a homogeneous group
their interestsin the various school organizations would beincreased, and thus a fairer contribution to thesame could be expected. My sympathies go out, especially, to newstudents. Their chances for getting into thespirit of the school and for knowing just whatis being done are limited, indeed. Now, everyone knows that we need these students in everytissue of the student body. Let us then educate them to be useful members of this body.Put before them a school paper, at least onceeach week, through which they can introducethemselves at the earliest possible moment. Weneed them.Sincerely,Andrew Mercker.C. C. 1915.We have also received favorable commentsfrom J. O. Engleman of Decatur, 111., (Mr.Engleman was formerly the principal of theNormal Training School), Mr. E. J. Hemmer, last years editor of the Advance, a goodly portion of our Faculty, (those who have beenasked about it), and last but not least, theBoard of Control in its February meetingvoted unanimously in favor of the weekly. And blessed are the horny hands of toil! The busy world shoves angrily asideThe man who stands with arms akimbo set,Until occasion tells him what to do.Tames Russell Lowell.
