THormal AdvanceVolume XX.TERRE HAUTE, IND., FEBRUARY, 1915.Number 5.&nno Domini 2215(With Apologies to Tennyson), By HILDA HATHAWAYTHE aeroplane stopped with a whirr abovethe Dunnings residence, and Jeanjumped lightly to the platform. She ran tothe doorway and stepped inside one of thewaiting elevators, pushing the button for thetenth floor. In a moment she had descended toher destination, where she found her motherlying down, reading the illustrated newspapersuspended above her head.Wheres father Jean asked her, when shehad hugged her once or twice by way of greeting.I think hes up in the nursery, teaching thebaby how to run that miniature biplane Ibought her the other day, replied Mrs. Dunning. I think you had better go up and speakto him now, because I should like to have yourun down to Washington with me this evening. The empress sent word to New York for a representative of the Anti-Trust Club to comedown, and they decided to send me.Id rather not, mother, answered Jean, Icabled Jack yesterday, when I left Paris, thatId be over to see him this evening.Very well, then. Jack is a very sweet boy, even though he is a little feminine, and seemsto think that the masculine sex should havemore rights.Well, do you know, confessed Jean, Irather like that in him. I dont know why, butI do. Wouldnt it be strange, though, if menshould be as the old legends say they used tobe, and women couldnt do anything.Oh, those stories are greatly exaggerated, declared Mrs. Dunning. Men are not, andnever were, capable of handling great matters.I know the men of this generation, at least, would not have the brains to get up and demand power for themselves.I dont know about that, mother. If I liveto be as old as sixty there are forty years yetin my life, and think how much can be accomplished in that time.Well, at least nothing will happen at present. But look, we have been talking five minutes. Run and kiss your father, and then getsomething to eat. Youll have to change yoursuit before you go to see Jack, wont you Oh, yes. I shall wear my wine-colored suit, with the silver buttons.Yes, that one looks best on you. But Ithink that suit is a very extravagant one, withsilver as scarce as it is.I can afford it. I just made about half amillion. I won the case for that rich old man,and he thanked me with tears in his eyes.Well, goodbye for the present, said hermother. Jean hurried into the elevator andsoon stepped out at the nursery, ten floorsabove. But her father was nowhere in sight. Soshe started back to the elevator, but suddenlycaught sight of him on a platform outside thenursery window, guiding the babys aeroplanearound by a slender steel thread. Jeanstepped to the platform and ran towards him. |
