It takes money to run a college paperand every one who does not subscribe is takingfrom the paper so much that is absolutely necessary to make it a truly great success. He is helping to bear down when his duty is to lift up.We are glad to announce that since our last issue Prof. Kemps book, A History for the Gradedand District Schools, has appeared. This is a bookof over five hundred pages containing interestingmaterial especially adapted to history work in thegrades and will be found very helpful to bothteachers and students. We feel that it will domuch towards satisfying the need of better history work in the district schools. This number, appearing as it does just previousto Thanksgiving, it is probably appropriate to ask,for what can the average student be thankful ?We make no attempt to answer this question, butwe believe every student to have much for whichhe can be thankful. If there is a student thatcannot look into the acts of his life each day andfind there some new thing for which to givethanks, then with that student there is somethingwrong. The faithful student finds new beautyand pleasure every day.In our last issue we called the attention of ourreaders to the plan of the Athletic Association forobtaining a school song. In this issue is a full account of this plan. In behalf of the AthleticAssociation, and the school in general, we trustthere will be a large number of contestants, forwe hope to obtain a song of literary merit andgood spirit. Nothing will fill the heart of thestudent with enthusiasm so much as to hear andjoin in the singing of a song which reflects thespirit of the institution. In this issue appears an article by T. D. Angle-meyer on the First Years Work of AmericanTeachers in the Philippines. This article contains some valuable informationconcerning the educational work of the islands, especially the work of the American teachers.Mr. Anglemeyer is a former student and graduateof our school here and we are glad to give hismany friends this opportunity of reading an article from him. The article was written for lastyear but came too late for publication. Hencewe are glad to print it at this time.We feel like giving a word of encouragementto our foot-ball team. They have met defeat andthe slugging of other teams without a word ofcomplaint. From inexperienced players, someof whom had never seen a game until they playedtheir first one, they have developed into a teamwhich is conceded to be as strong as any in the city. This exemplifies what perseverance and practicecan accomplish, while the spirit they show intheir games shows them to be faithful students asas well as athletes.
