THE NOEMAL ADVANCE.9the officers elected last spring did not return andit took some time to fill their places. Now that thestaff is complete, we hope to bo very prompt hereafter. We might say in this connection we were sorryto lose Mr. Moore as our business manager andalso Mr. Hucncryager, who was to have taken hisplace. We now have the place satisfactorily filledand feel assured of the success of that department. With this issue The Advance begins anotheryear. We hope to furnish to our readers an interesting paper, creditable to our school and exemplifying the life of the institution. While we donot wish to shift any responsibility from ourshoulders that rightfully belongs there, we do feelthat the success of this paper rests in a greatmeasure with the students and alumni, and weearnestly solicit your support. Anything you cando to help either the business or editorial staff willbe greatly appreciated, and. by mutually helpingeach other we hope to satisfy your expectations.. We are glad to note the interest manifested in.the athletics of the school by both faculty andstudents. At the meeting of the Athletic Association, on Oct. 17, much enthusiasm was shown.Speeches were made by several members of thefaculty and also by a number of students. Whilewe arc small in number as compared to manyother schools, still we feel, there is a bright outlookso long as the students keep up the interest manifested at this meeting. It is a recognized fact inall schools of any note at this time that athleticsare an important part of the school. If the I. S.N. expects to keep to the front as one of the leading schools she must keep athletics to the front, for the strongest and best students arc not goine/to attend a school that is not up-to-date in thisrespect. It might be added here that, while the ladieswere well represented at the meeting, they wererather crowded to the background when it cameto the speeches. The ladies are an important feature in the asociation as to number and especiallyas to the athletic work they expect to do for theschool this year. We say this because it was suggested by some of the ladies that they should begiven an opportunity to talk over their work atthese meetings, as it is only by so doing that theycan get the school interested in what they hope toaccomplish. So let us not forget the girls and theirpart in athletics.Athletics.The interest in athletics is at present centeredin football. This game is yet comparatively a newsport at the Normal. Most of the players are menwho have never played before, which accounts forthe scores in. the games played this season. However, great credit is due to the players for theirdevelopment, and, even if we win only a fewgames, the schools suport is due to the men whoare nurturing this game through its infancy. The first game of the season was played withthe T. H. H. S. Oct. 4. In the first half the Normal kicked off to the High School. After tenminutes playing the High School made a longend run and landed the ball behind the Normalgoal, Strecker kicked goal. The Normal againkicked off and the rest of the time was spent inhard playing by both teams. At the end of thehalf the ball was near the middle of the field. In the second half the High School kicked offand after ten minutes playing the Normal carried the ball over the High School goal line, butMetskar failed to kick goal. The High Schoolkicked off and after a few plays got the ball on an |
