Description: THE NORMAL ADVANCE125ings. Other old members drop in from time
to time to visit and to give a word of en¬
couragement.DER DEUTSCHE VEREIN.The German Club is at its best this term.
The membership approximates twenty and the
characteristic thing is that the full member¬
ship is almost invariably in attendance. All
realize that anyone at all interested in German
language and literature is missing the best
thing going on that line if he fails to meet with
the club at 3:30 each Wednesday.Prof. Mutterer, head of the German depart¬
ment, has been induced to give his time to the
club each Wednesday afternoon, and is
generously devoting himself to initiating the
members into the beauties of Wagner. At pres¬
ent, he is reading Siegfried from the Niebe-
lungen Cycle. Plans are being laid for one or
two special programs in the near future in
which speakers from the city will be brought
in. Those who speak the language or are ap¬
preciative students of its intricacies, would do
well to acquaint themselves with the doings of
the club. Kommen sie nur mit una,ECLECTIC.The work of the Eclectic Literary Society
has been very interesting this term, and has
proved very beneficial. The new members are
very enthusiastic and their work has been well
done. Miss Noel, who has been received as a
new member, is a very good addition to the
society. Some special programs have been prepared
for the remainder of the term. The literary
work will be based upon Victor Hugos Les
Miserables.FORUM.The Forum Literary Society is exercising
quite an interest in current topics, and other
avenues of information, that are being dis¬
cussed from time to time. Each member is as¬
suming the duties of a Forum socially as well
as intellectually. The regular term smoker was given Tues¬
day evening, February 3. Messrs. Hoffman,
Dalton, Blackman, Rightsell, Hahn, Mercker,
Mahan and Johnston were present.Mr. Mackell, of Montgomery, Ind., Mr.
Fowler, of Bicknell, Ind., and Mr. Carmack, of
Brazil, Ind., visited friends in Terre Haute re¬
cently.PHILOMATHEAN.One of the most interesting programs of this
term was the Kipling program, which was
given Saturday. Feb. 12. Roll call wTas answer¬
ed by quotations from Kipling. The first num¬
ber on the program was an instrumental solo
given by Esther Newton. Thus we were pre¬
pared for the most excellent talk on the life
and works of Kipling, given by Professor
Curry. The beautiful poem, The Recessional,
sung by Gladys Rippetoe, was an appropriate
ending for such a meeting. The Philomathean
Literary Society, anticipating the value of such
a program, invited all of the other literary so-
cities of the school to share this treat. To show our appreciation of Mr. Currys
talk, let us with one voice say, Thank you!
Come again.Miss Marguerite Allen is now a member of
our society. We expect great things from her.Beauty without virtue is a flower without
perfume.
